Maryam Alavi Maryam Alavi holds the John M. and Lucy Cook's Chair in Information Strategy at the Goizueta Business School of Emory University. She also serves as the Director of Knowledge@Emory Program at the Goizueta Business School. Prior to joining Emory, Maryam was at the University of Maryland at College Park, where she was the Orkand Professor of Information Systems (IS) and Chairperson of the IS Department. Maryam was awarded the distinguished Marvin Bower Faculty Fellowship at the Harvard Business School. She also was a recipient of the prestigious University of Maryland Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award, and was twice awarded the University of Maryland Robert H. Smith School of Business' Krowe Award in Teaching Innovation. Maryam was elected to serve as the subject matter expert in a benchmarking study of technology-mediated learning conducted jointly by the AACSB and the American Pro- ductivity and Quality Center in Houston, Texas. Maryam has authored numerous scholarly papers in the areas of decision support systems, end-user computing, collaboration support, and, more recently, technology-mediated learning and knowledge management. She is a frequent speaker at the national and international research conferences on these topics. Her research in the areas of collaboration support and technology-mediated learning has been supported by funds and hardware grants from the AT&T Foundation, AT&T Corporation, Lucent Technologies, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Maryam has served on the editorial boards of several scholarly IS journals including MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, and Journal of Management Information Systems. She is also a member of the editorial board of Encyclopedia of Computer and Information Systems. Maryam has done pioneering work in the area of computer-mediated collaborative learning and distance learning by applying knowledge and expertise gained from her research directly to classroom teaching. She has developed and implemented pedagogical approaches, which optimally utilize computer and communication technology in support of teaching/learning processes and has developed unique ways to improve these processes. Her teaching innovations have been featured in U.S. News and World Report. Maryam teaches at the undergraduate, graduate, and executive development levels. She has taught executive development courses at the University of Maryland at College Park, Emory, Harvard Business School, and Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. Maryam has been very active at the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS). She served as the Program Co-Chair at the 1990 ICIS, as the Co-Chair of the Doctoral Consortium at the 1995 ICIS, and as a member of the ICIS Executive Committee. She currently serves as a member of the AIS Executive Council and is the twice-elected VP of Education of AIS. Maryam has consulted with several private and public organizations including KPMG Peat Marwick LLP, Lotus/IBM, Lucent Technologies, Marriott Corporation, the American College of Physicians, the General Accounting Office, and the World Bank. |
