Niels Bjørn-Andersen Niels exemplifies an internationalscholar in information systems. He has been one of the major developersof the field in Denmark, a major participant in IS academic activitiesin the European community, the second president of AIS (1996), and a well-regardedresearcher. Niels started his careeras a systems analyst with Unilever in 1967 and received a research scholarshipat the Copenhagen Business School (CBS) in 1969. He received hisPh.D. in decision support systems in 1973. Niels served for two years ashead of the Department of Organization and Industrial Sociology and wasappointed associate professor in 1974. In 1987, Niels was appointed fullprofessor at the newly formed Department of Informatics and ManagementAccounting at the Copenhagen Business School. Since April 1998, he hasserved as Head of the Department of Informatics at CBS and, since August1998, as Director of the Center for Electronic Commerce. He is a global scholar. Hehas given more than 100 presentations at international conferences. Hehas been a visiting researcher/professor at six well-known institutionsoutside Denmark. Niels served three years as a member of the ComputingCommittee of the British Social Science research Council. Niels has servedon several academic review boards in Finland, Norway, and Sweden, as wellas Denmark. He served for many years as the Danish representative to theInternational Federation for Information Processing Technical Committee8 (Information Systems). Niels served as ConferenceChair for the 1990 International Conference on Information Systems in Copenhagen,Denmark. This was the first ICIS outside the United States. Niels has been responsiblefor the development of a number of different teaching programs. He wasresponsible for a the “Datamatik-linien” program in Organization Studiesat CBS from 1976 through 1986. He was also responsible for the undergraduateand graduate degree program in Computer Science and Business Administrationfrom 1987 through 1998. He is currently responsible for teaching and researchwithin the areas of IT strategy and managing the IT resource within theCopenhagen Business School. He is actively engaged in launching a GlobalElectronic Commerce and Digital Business Master’s GEM by September 2000. He was responsible for thePh.D. program in Information and Computer Science at Copenhagen BusinessSchool from 1987 through 1998. In addition, he has successfully supervised10 Ph.D. students. His publication list includes15 books, more than 30 refereed articles, and about 100 other publications.He has carried out more than 30 major research projects within the areasof design of information systems, implementation of information systems,consequences of information systems, managing the information systems resourcesin organizations, electronic commerce, and development of multimedia applications. Since the late 1980s, Nielshas actively participated in the European Strategic Programme on InformationTechnology (ESPRIT). He has been part of the design and review processfor many programs and projects. He has been the contract holder on sevenESPRIT projects. These include projects on information technology adoptionsupport, quality of life in the information society, and best businesspractice for business processes using IT. Currently he has two ESPRITcontracts. The first of these is BLinc Business Innovations Networks –Learning with Interactive Cases, 1998-2000) together with five other majorbusiness schools in Europe. The second is Global Electronic Commerce MastersNetwork (GECOMNET, 1998-1999) aimed at developing a Master’s program withinElectronic Commerce. In the latter project, Niels is European coordinatorof the program. |
