James L. McKenney Jim McKenney

James L. McKenney was born in Chicago and grew up there. He received a B.S. and an M.S. from Purdue University and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Jim was a member of the Harvard Business School faculty from 1960 to 1996. He distinguished himself as an expert in management information systems and the use of computer systems for teaching business management. He was involved in all of the School's educational programs during his career. He offered a wide variety of electives, including Information Systems and Control, Management Information Systems, Foundations of Computer Systems, Management of Natural Resources, and Management of Nonprofit Organizations. He also taught required MBA courses in Production and Operations Management and Control. He served as the School's director of computer services and introduced the first computer-based simulation exercise (known as the Harvard Business Game) to the curriculum in 1961.

Jim wrote many case studies while at Harvard, including some of the first cases on airline reservation systems and on inventory management across the consumer products supply chain. He also co-authored several books on Corporate Information Management. His most recent book is Waves of Change: Business Evolution through Information Technology (Harvard Business School Press, 1995).

Jim served the International Conference on Information Systems in many capacities, including Consortium Chair, Conference Co-Chair, and Executive Committee Co-Chair.
